Empire

The Second Empire style building at 230 Commercial Street is the focal point of this painting.  Built in 1874 by Benjamin Lancy, a merchant and ship owner, for his mother Nabby (Cook) Lancy, who wanted the largest, tallest and finest house in Provincetown.  The slightly haunted look may be apropos, Nabby died on February 27, 1896, and was allegedly kept in her bedroom with the windows open for three months until the ground thawed enough for her burial.
